Jealous of the neighbour’s incredibly giving lemon tree? Donโt be, plant your own fruit tree this year instead!
๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐ฝ๐:
- Do your research first: find out which trees will flourish in your region.
- Ask yourself: What types of fruit would your family enjoy eating i.e. stone or citrus?
- Self-pollinating trees like nectarine and peach can be planted alone whereas apple, plum and pear trees arenโt self-pollinating, which means you would need to plant at least two of them in order for the trees to bear fruit.
- Is your garden too small but you want variety? Consider growing your trees in pots to contain them.
- Pick a sunny area that offers well-drained soil.
- Dig a hole, place the tree inside, and mix the soil with compost (1 part for every 2 parts soil) and superphosphate (1 cup for every 2 parts soil).
- Add a drainage pipe for deep watering.
- Mulch!
- Yes, fruit flies and other pests are an issue. Know this going in. โข Daily spraying of a natural organic spray may be required.
- Prune in June or July.
