Jealous of the neighbour’s incredibly giving lemon tree? Donโ€™t be, plant your own fruit tree this year instead!

  • Do your research first: find out which trees will flourish in your region.
  • Ask yourself: What types of fruit would your family enjoy eating i.e. stone or citrus?
  • Self-pollinating trees like nectarine and peach can be planted alone whereas apple, plum and pear trees arenโ€™t self-pollinating, which means you would need to plant at least two of them in order for the trees to bear fruit.
  • Is your garden too small but you want variety? Consider growing your trees in pots to contain them.
  • Pick a sunny area that offers well-drained soil.
  • Dig a hole, place the tree inside, and mix the soil with compost (1 part for every 2 parts soil) and superphosphate (1 cup for every 2 parts soil).
  • Add a drainage pipe for deep watering.
  • Mulch!
  • Yes, fruit flies and other pests are an issue. Know this going in. โ€ข Daily spraying of a natural organic spray may be required.
  • Prune in June or July.

Ornamental grasses are absolutely elegant, and this trend is growing in popularity in gardens across the world due to their minimalistic appearance.

#DidYouKnow that ornamental grass can help to enhance your gardenโ€™s biodiversity because they attract butterflies and birds?

Ornamental grasses are also hardy, naturally waterwise (once established), can bring beautiful colour, texture and height to the garden and require little maintenance. Plus, these grasses can even prevent soil erosion.

How to plant:

  • Plant in full sun
  • Cut when they look tattered after winter
  • Divide when they become overcrowded
  • Add compost to the soil annually

It is very important to choose indigenous grasses like Ngongoni three-awnonly, Natal red-top, Saw-tooth love grass ONLY!

Change the way you think about your garden this year.

Make it an indegenious, waterwise haven.

When it comes to all your hose pipe and hose pipe connector needs, we have drip-free and kink-free solutions that have been made in SA with the South African garden in mind.

  • ๐—™๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ – feed indoor and outdoor containers, fruit trees and roses with slow releasing fertilisers.
  • ๐— ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฐ๐—ต – top up your mulch because this month will get very hot and dry and gardens will get very thirsty.
  • ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ – Coleus, Begonias and New Guinea Impatiens in the shade and Dahlias, Marigolds and Petunias in the sun.
  • ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐˜„ – if you are looking to get that vegetables going now is a good time to sow seeds or plant seedlings for beetroot, carrots, brinjals, chilies and tomatoes, parsley etc.

Hydrangeas in full bloom!

This time of the year hydrangeas (aka Christmas roses) are decorating gardens across the country. It makes an incredible cut flower for the festive table too. But what if you are struggling to grow yours or want a specific colour?

Try these tips:

  • The more acidic your soil (lower than 6.0) the more blue or lavender in colour your hydrangeas will appear. The more alkaline (higher than 7.0) the more pink or red they will turn. Soil with a pH balance of between 6 and 7 will turn your hydrangeas bluish-pink.
  • Plant your hydrangeas in a sheltered spot that gets loads of morning sunlight but no to little afternoon sun.
  • Add organic material to your beds and ensure good drainage and your hydrangeas will flourish.
