• Add compost and bonemeal to your soil and work it in.
• Mulch to protect soil from the cold and to retain moisture.
• Plant your winter veggies like cabbage, cauliflower and onions.
• The ideal time to plant anything new or move plants as they’ll have enough time to establish before winter settles in.
• Do you have agapanthus or lilies? Time to split and divide them.
• Prune away dead plants and flower heads or shrubs that have grown a bit wild.
• Time to feed your roses with rose food, and your lawn with lawn fertiliser.
• Adjust watering on a plant-by-plant basis. Newly planted or transplanted plants need loads of water.
• Other plants need less, but they still need some water. Your plants aren’t dormant yet, their roots are doing a lot of work to prepare for winter, and therefore need water.

Vegetables contain a lot of water, naturally, they’ll be thirsty too…here’s how to save water in your vegetable garden:

• Regularly work in organic matter into the soil to help the soil retain water better
• Add a thick layer of mulch to slow down evaporation
• During summer, hang a cloth for shade to offer some protection from the heat
• Add windbreaks as the wind can dry out plants too
• Deweed regularly
• Water at cooler times – between 9pm and 6am
• Water deeply and less often
• Collect rainwater and use this for your veggie patch
• Go old school and water by hand

Watering a vegetable garden by hand is part of the TLC process. It serves 3 purposes:

1. It saves water
2. It allows you to give more thirsty vegetables what they need without drowning those that don’t
3. It ensures that you keep an eye on each individual plant regularly so you can give each plant exactly what it needs when it needs it

Succulents are generally easy to grow in containers or in a bed, but if yours seem unhappy, here are some things that could be wrong:

• Check the drainage. Succulents need to drain extremely well.
• Check the soil. Succulents need cacti or succulent-specific soil. Repot every year with new soil.
• Check that they are getting enough water – not too little or too much. Outside succulents need some water once a week and inside ones about every 10 days.
• Check that they are getting enough sun. Six hours of sunlight is the average.
• Check if they aren’t too hot or too cold. Succulents like to be warm but not HOT and definitely never freezing.
• Fertilise them once per week during spring and summer.

If you were away in December, your garden will most probably be restored to its previous glory by now. And we’re sure your veggie patch is coming along nicely too. Well done, you!

But there’s still much to do and prioritise before autumn arrives, so let’s dig in:

• First off, keep lawns at a decent length as going too short can expose the roots to too much sun.
• Spotting any pests? Manage termites, mole crickets and ants with organic insecticide.
• As per usual, get rid of weeds and cut away dead flower heads.
• Use a slow-release fertiliser in your flower beds and containers.
• Vegetables to plant: cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli
• Flowers to plant: cinerarias, gazanias, Iceland poppies, primulas, pansies, columbines, and aquilegias will flower in winter/spring if you plant them now.
• And mulch, mulch, mulch! It’s going to get hot in the garden and your plants will need it!
