Vegetables contain a lot of water, naturally, theyโ€™ll be thirsty tooโ€ฆhereโ€™s how to save water in your vegetable garden:

  • Regularly work in organic matter into the soil to help the soil retain water better
  • Add a thick layer of mulch to slow down evaporation
  • During summer, hang a cloth for shade to offer some protection from the heat
  • Add windbreaks as the wind can dry out plants too
  • Deweed regularly
  • Water at cooler times – between 9pm and 6am
  • Water deeply and less often
  • Collect rainwater and use this for your veggie patch
  • Go old school and water by hand

Watering a vegetable garden by hand is part of the TLC process. It serves 3 purposes:

  1. It saves water
  2. It allows you to give more thirsty vegetables what they need without drowning those that donโ€™t
  3. It ensures that you keep an eye on each individual plant regularly so you can give each plant exactly what it needs when it needs it
